“Translation and Terminology” in the “Master in Learning and Communication in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts” (Multilearn)
In 2013 I was asked by the University of Luxembourg as visiting professor to create a course on Terminology together with Prof. Rute Costa from the NOVA University of Lisbon in the “Master in Learning and Communication in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts” (Multilearn). In my part I involved some colleagues from TermCoord as lecturers specialised in the management of the EU database IATE, communication and linguistic tools.
Since 2019, the module “Translation and Terminology” has been substantially developed in duration and content to meet all new challenges of the linguistic sector and to present the multiple opportunities offered in the labour market. It covered 35 hours in the two first semesters of the Master, focusing on several aspects of terminology in translation and interpreting in relation to communication.
The course became a formal cooperation with the Directorate General of Translation. Heads of Units of DG TRAD, translators and terminologists, teach interesting aspects of multilingualism in the European Union, the legal concepts as well as terminology and translation tools.
The students are taught about the functioning and challenges of TermCoord and the Translation Units. Until 2022 they were given the possibility to spend 2 to 3 weeks in the European Parliament, counting as a credited internship. During this period, a total of 173 students – who assisted in communication the TermCoord trainees team – were completely involved in the activity of the Unit, developing terminology projects and learning how to manage the website, social media accounts as well as draft posts, which were published on termcoord.eu
