Academic Cooperation

The Terminology Without Borders project of the Terminology Coordination Unit (TermCoord) reflects and supports the goal of the European Parliament’s Directorate-General for Translation (DG TRAD) to communicate with citizens in clear language.

It makes part of the collaboration with Universities for Terminology.

TermCoord launched Terminology Without Borders in collaboration with

  • EU and UN Agencies and
  • International Organisations

The main aim of the project is to enhance communication in a number of domains by tailoring terminology to citizens’ needs. This aim is achieved using several multilingual projects.

Each one of these multilingual projects contains terminology resources of the partners provided to the users and serving as a reference for the collaborating universities, the ongoing terminology entries and tables and related articles written by experts in each field.

The Workflow consisted of several stages:

  • term extraction from corpora to create projects (English is preferable as the source language to enable more Universities to collaborate)
  • research by students for the equivalents in their language
  • revision carried out by the experts of the partner organisations

The outcome of the projects will also be used to enrich IATE following the required validation by terminologists of the EU Institutions. (Therefore, students should check in IATE and add the ID if the term exists and either copy it in their language or make update suggestions).

The quality of the published glossaries is under the responsibility of the collaborators. All collaborators are invited to consult experts to ensure the accuracy of the terms.

YourTerm Cult YourTerm Cultural Collaboration

The students will gather terms concerning the European cultural capitals. It consists of a big corpus from the texts produced by the over hundred European Capitals of Culture for projects covering all fields of art.

As part of the Applied Research Project (ARP) at ISIT, students carried out a terminology project for TermCoord. The objective was to produce a series of 30 terminology records in French and English on the theme of “smart cities”, in order to integrate them into the IATE platform.

Terminology Projects
Terminology on Migration

The Aristotle University’s IATE project on migration was carried out by MA students during their second year of the Inter-Faculty Postgraduate Program in Translation. The aim of this project was to both initiate MA students to terminology work and to contribute to the IATE term-base with well-documented and reliable terms. Our final results were also discussed with experts in the fields of Migration Law and Social Anthropology.
Terminology on Packaging Materials

The aim of this work was to feed the IATE term base with English and Greek terms related to the domain of ‘Packaging Materials’. Based on the concept map of WIPO PEARL on packaging materials and equipment, almost 50 terms were collected, while over 100 terms were extracted from authentic corpora, according to their frequency and importance. Final results were also discussed with terminology experts from the Greek Department of the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Parliament in a wiki environment, provided by the e-learning platform of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Terminology on Coeliac disease

The aim of this project, conducted during the second year of the Inter-Faculty Postgraduate Program in Translation, was to provide accurate terminology concerning the domain of coeliac disease and the subdomain of biology in particular. The project includes the presentation of the domain of study, the primary and secondary sources for terminology validation, the tools used for data collection as well as the stages of the study. The final results of the study were discussed with experts in the fields of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Microbiology.
Terminology on European Capitals of Culture (Terminology Without Borders)

Culture was, is and will always be an important domain in the history of Europe. One of the oldest and most prestigious cultural programs is the European Capitals of Culture. The main goal of CULT-EL project was to find equivalent terms in Greek and English along with definition or context in English, based on the ontology in this domain of European Capitals of Culture. Our study includes the presentation of the study area, the methodology adopted, the tools used for corpus management, a detailed description of the different stages of our research and the termbase in Excel format created with the final results of our work.

University of Naples Parthenope

University of Parthenope Logo

In the framework of our collaboration with universities from all over the world, TermCoord works jointly with the University of Parthenope (Naples, Italy) on various food-related terminology projects. Students from the University of Parthenope provided terms in Italian, Spanish and French for the Novel Foods and New Eating Habits sub-domain.

Since 2020, the PhD students from this same university also write, once per month, an article on an Italian culinary speciality. TermCoord publishes it as part of the IATE Food Term of the Week initiative launched in 2016 and which purpose is to write on a very specific dish from a country or a region in order to make it discover to all of our readers.

The teacher Raffaella Antinucci, professor of English Literature at the University of Parthenope and writer of a collection of essays on the terminology of traditional Neapolitan arts and crafts (Cambridge Scholars, 2019) supervises the project.

This project is a way to promote the terminology of gastronomy and to spread European culinary culture and richness, also linked to European cultural traditions.

With more than 40 articles written until 2022, this cooperation is going strong and we created an e-book collecting all of the articles written by the PhD students of the University of Parthenope.

Terminology Projects

YourTerm FEM: Women’s Rights

This project was carried out by eight postgraduate students enrolled on the MA in the Science of Translation offered by the Department of Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University (DFLTI) in Corfu, Greece and in the framework of the elective module “Translation on Political and EU Texts” delivered by Dr. Vilelmini Sosoni, Assistant Professor at the DFLTI. The project’s aim was three-fold, as it sought to familiarize students with term formation mechanisms and the production of bilingual term glossaries, contribute to the enrichment of the IATE database with reliable and well-documented terms in the English-Greek language pair, and also introduce students to the challenges involved in carrying out research and seeking reliable documentation resources in a particularly interesting area, that of women’s’ rights.

YourTerm JURI: Juridical & Legal Terminology

This project was carried out by sixteen postgraduate students enrolled on the MA in the Science of Translation offered by the Department of Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University (DFLTI) in Corfu, Greece and in the framework of a legal translation course delivered by Dr. Vilelmini Sosoni, Assistant Professor at the DFLTI. The project’s aim is to contribute to the enrichment of the IATE database with reliable and well-documented terms in the English-Greek language pair, and also introduce postgraduate students to the challenges involved in carrying out research and seeking reliable documentation resources in the legal terminology field.

YourTerm ENVI: Environment & Conservation

Nature & Biodiversity

This project was carried out by postgraduate students enrolled on the MA in the Science of Translation offered by the Department of Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University (DFLTI) in Corfu, Greece coordinated by Prof. Sotirios Keramidas. The project’s aim was three-fold, as it sought to familiarize students with term formation mechanisms and the production of bilingual term glossaries, contribute to the enrichment of the IATE database with reliable and well-documented terms in the English-Greek language pair, and also introduce students to the challenges involved in carrying out research and seeking reliable documentation resources in a particularly interesting area, that of Nature and Biodiversity.

termcoord.eu: Tax Law of the French Republic and their indexing

This project was realized by Prodromou Zoi and Tsatsis Stavros, two senior students of the French section of the Department of Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University (DFLTI), Corfu, Greece. The framework of cooperation between the Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament (TermCoord) headed by the Head of the European Parliament’s Terminology Coordination Unit, Mr. Rodolfos Maslias, and the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University, was the occasion for the elaboration of our dissertations. The dissertations consist in the creation of special French to Greek tax glossaries, with terms coming from the field of the Tax Law of the French Republic and their indexing. Each paper consists of twenty term entry sheets from the aforementioned topic. Our purpose during our research was to find and study terms that either needed further analysis, or were absent from the online platform of the European Union terminology database IATE (Interactive Terminology for Europe), in order to enrich it. Through our collaboration with both IATE and our Prof. Michael Politis we managed to highlight the contribution of term indexing and the creation of glossaries in the deeper understanding of a scientific text and we finally yielded 40 Greek new target terms.

termcoord.eu: Brexit, Korea Crisis, Cyclic Economy & Waste Reduction, Disinformation & Cybersecurity, Inequality, Terrorism & Youth Empowerment

This project, coordinated by Prof. Olaf Seel, was realised by students of the German section of the Department of Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University (DFLTI), Corfu, Greece. It fostered a two-fold aim: to familiarize the students with terminology and the production of bilingual term glossaries while at the same time contribute to the enrichment of the IATE data base with reliable and well-documented terms on the basis of the language pair German-Greek. Though the project was initiated as a syllabus-independent initiative, it managed to attract 33 participants. Organized in independent groups, the students worked on the following seven current topics of European and global interest which are underrepresented or even absolutely new in IATE: Brexit, Korea Crisis, Cyclic Economy and Waste Reduction, Disinformation and Cybersecurity, Inequality, Terrorism and Youth Empowerment. In addition, three more groups of students worked on already existing subject areas on TermCoord’s platform for University Projects, i.e. Industrial Manufacturing (University of Applied Science Upper Austria), Judicial and Court System and Organ Donation (both: University of Heidelberg), which provided them with German concepts. These terms were used as source terms and were also complemented by more concepts extracted by the students from other reliable sources. After its conclusion, the work on the ten German-Greek term glossaries, which include definitions, definition references, contexts and context references, yielded all together 338 Greek new target terms.
